Trekking round the farm to see the horses or taking visitors round the farm has been a problem ever since the Rescue Centre was set up 30 years ago. The problem was always that the steam had to be crossed in two places but there was only one bridge. A second bridge had been built but was demolished by exceptional floods within a few years of construction. About a year ago some reinforced concrete lintels were purchased cheaply from nearby and this last summer Martyn, Tony and Alex laid them on secure foundations. The next stage was to organise a load of redimix concrete with labour to move it. The day dawned on the 18th October when fortunately the drought ensured the ground was hard to move vehicles on.
Stuart Crabb, who often helps out on Open Days doing the car park, came along to help. The lorry of mix turned up late but the driver was so amenable that he suggested driving this heavy vehicle right down the field to be as close as possible for the dumper truck to ferry the mix to and fro. Martyn drove the dumper, backwards downhill which was safer, while Stuart, Alex and Tony shovelled it around onto the lintels and more steel mesh to produce a perfect smooth finish. Within a couple of hours all were back at the house having a cuppa and all that remains now is to erect the wooden rails along the sides and farm gates either end. It is strong enough to take vehicles and you can even play poosticks from it!
Furthermore any visitors will now be able to take a circular tour of the farm conveniently without getting caught in barbed wire!
